๐ŸŽฏ IELTS Academic Preparation

A complete, self-paced course to prepare for the IELTS Academic test. Twelve focused lessons cover all four skills โ€” Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking โ€” plus every major question type, the official band descriptors, annotated model answers, and the exam strategy that turns your English into the score you need.

๐Ÿ“š About This Course

This is a skills-and-strategy course, not a grammar level. It teaches you to do what the test actually rewards: recognize question types, manage the clock, paraphrase fluently, structure essays and data descriptions, speak at length, and play to the mark scheme. Every lesson pairs technique with the academic English that underpins a high band, and shows you exactly how examiners score.

It's built around the Academic version (for university study and professional registration). Because Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions, General Training candidates can use most of it too โ€” only Reading and Writing differ.

What You'll Master

  • The test format, the 9-band scoring system, and how to set a target
  • Academic vocabulary, paraphrasing, and the grammar range a high band needs
  • Listening & Reading strategies for every question type โ€” including the notorious True/False/Not Given
  • Writing Task 1 (describing graphs, charts, processes) and Task 2 (academic essays)
  • The four Writing and Speaking band descriptors โ€” and how to hit them
  • Speaking Parts 1โ€“3: fluency, developing answers, and pronunciation
  • Test-day strategy, timing, and a personal study plan

Who This Course Is For

  • University and postgraduate applicants who need a specific IELTS band
  • Professionals needing IELTS for registration or migration
  • Self-study learners who want structured, examiner-aware preparation

๐ŸŽš๏ธ Level & Band Targets

IELTS isn't a CEFR level โ€” it's an exam that measures your level. This course assumes you already have a solid foundation of English and teaches you to convert it into a band score. As a rough guide, IELTS bands map onto the CEFR ladder like this:

IELTS bandโ‰ˆ CEFRTypical use
4.0 โ€“ 5.0B1Foundation; below most university requirements
5.5 โ€“ 6.5B2Most undergraduate & many postgraduate courses
7.0 โ€“ 8.0C1Competitive programs; many professions
8.5 โ€“ 9.0C2Near-native mastery

Recommended starting point: you'll get the most from this course at roughly B1โ€“B2 and above. If your general English isn't there yet, the fastest route to a higher band is to raise your level first โ€” work through the graded CEFR courses (A1 โ†’ C2) on the ESL Hub, then return here for exam technique.

๐Ÿงญ How to Study This Course

  1. Start with Lesson 1.1 to set your target and plan โ€” then attack your weakest skill first, since the overall band is an average.
  2. Practice under real time limits. IELTS tests the clock as much as your English โ€” build timing in from the start.
  3. Learn the mark scheme. Study the band descriptors (Lessons 3.3 & 4.2) and self-assess your own writing and speaking against them.
  4. Do the tasks. Every lesson ends with real practice and model answers โ€” write the essays and record the speaking, don't just read.
  5. Use official practice material for full mock tests, and get feedback on your Writing and Speaking where you can.

๐Ÿง  A word before you begin

The band you need is a target you can train for, not a talent you either have or lack. Candidates routinely gain half a band or more from technique alone โ€” knowing the question types, managing time, and giving the examiner exactly what the descriptors ask for. Learn the game, practice deliberately, and the score will follow. ๐ŸŒฑ
